The Emperor Has No New Clothes And His Tailor Appears To Be Clueless !

It’s often been said that you never actually miss something until it’s gone , unless it just happens to be an ex spouse or mate as the case may be . I remember once Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones made the statement ……’ that anyone could coach or lead the Dallas Cowboys to victory ‘ . My oh my , how times fly because it’s literally been years since Jones’ beloved Cowboys made a Superbowl appearance and actually raised the Lombardi Trophy . Since the abrupt firing or believe what you will Jimmy Johnson leaving the Cowboys of his own accord the team las literally stunk up the joint . And about the only real signs of progress shown was when another former coach of the team Bill Parcells had a brief stint with the organization . In light of the egos involved I’m surprised that the duo of Parcells and Jones were able to remain amicable with one another under such an intense environment and spotlight !

Come full circle , after last season’s debacle where Jones took it upon himself to fire yet another coach , Wade Phillips and replace him with Jason Garrett , I’m now beginning to wonder whether or not Garrett will be able to survive the intense scrutiny he’s about to receive from not only the owner and general manager , in Jerry Jones but also the prying eyes of the nation’s journalists who cover the NFL as well the sports radio talks shows television analysts who cover the sport as well. ‘ America’s Team ‘ is no longer the bauble that Jones can dangle before us and say ……. look at me now ? If anything this Cowboys team in its current embodiment is simply another under achieving roster filled with extravagantly overpaid stars whose productivity at best can be described as being no better than average ! Having come off a woefully inept season even by Jones’ lofty standards the fact that the Dallas Cowboys didn’t get sniff of the playoffs was a delight to see . Nothing had pleased me more over the course of last season than seeing the Dallas Cowboys being hoisted on their own backside and the fact that the overhyped Minnesota Vikings led by the now vilified Brett Favre were no better than your average varsity college team at the D3 level. Suffice to say that were either Cowboys or Vikings a marine vessel they might have capsized at sea ! When leadership was needed from the Cowboys or Vikings it was nowehere to be found . And the end result was to be expected with neither team sniffing the postseason

With relatively newly installed coaches with their respective teams it remains to be seen how both Jason Garrett , Leslie Frazier and his coaching staff will proceed to lead their teams and how they will actually communicate with the players on the rosters in question. It’s sad to say that even now with the policy change with regard to their being more scrutinized than prison inmates and how that will be dealt by such players Tony Romo , Dez Bryant , Jason Witten , Miles Austin and others on team. Given the fact that the Cowboys lost their Pro Bowl quarterback in the midst of last season ______ to see the problems that befell the Dallas Cowboys was merely seeing how ill equipped they were when it came to facing real adversity . I’d like to think that the change in fortune that we saw in the latter part of the season with the Cowboys augurs well for the future . But I’m not so sure that this team even with Romo at the helm , replacing his backup Jon Kitna will actually be enough to persuade me that the team can be looked at as legitimate contenders for any future Superbowl. Tony Romo to my mind, has yet to prove to me that he’s even capable of leading the team through the postseason , much less winning a series of playoff games !

The debacle that befell the Cowboys and their standing within the NFC East in spite of the apparent competitiveness of the division leads me to believe that the Dallas Cowboys aren’t all they’re cracked up to be . Repeatedly year in and year out they’re viewed as presumptive favorites for the Superbowl and they tend to disappoint you more than an ugly female contestant who’s participating in the swimwear format of a beauty competition. Can it it get any worse watching the Dallas Cowboys nowadays ? I’ll leave that all for you to decide ! But I do know this , until Jerry Jones hands over the reins to an individual with a keen insight as to what is needed in building a roster by making the right personnel decisions needed to turn the Cowboys into a fully fledged competitive team I’ll continue to look at the Dallas Cowboys as merely an after thought .

I think it’s now suddenly beginning to dawn on many Los Angeles Lakers’ fans that this may well be the swansong for the team’s most beloved coach in Phil Jackson . It’s hard to believe that he has won almost half of the allotted NBA titles collected by organization over the course of their history . And I know that nothing will ever measure up to the Showtime Lakers that had Magic Johnson , Kareem and James Worthy parading their skills while being coached by Pat Riley . But what Jackson has achieved with this team over the course of his two stints with the Lakers , with Jerry Buss at the helm as owner , Jerry West as its general manager to be succeeded then by Mitch Kupchak speaks a great deal as to the volume of Jackson not only as a coach but also as someone who has seen fit to let loose of the reins in order to be an even better coach. Granted, it’d often been said he could only coach superstars , as was the case with Michael Jordan , Scottie Pippen and the unprecedented success Jackson had as coach of the Bulls with their multiple titles over the years.

Jackson would also replicate that success having completed a third three-peat with the Lakers with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal along for the ride . However, we also saw it all fall apart for Jackson when during the 2003-4 season the Lakers fell apart under the wealth of expectation losing in the NBA Finals to the Detroit Pistons ____ losing that lopsided series 4-1 . Less we forget also that was the team where Bryant and O’Neal were also joined by Karl Malone and Gary Payton . With that many egos on the court all at the same time I was surprised that the team only had one ball on the court for the Lakers’ players to play with ! The ignominy of losing that final in the aftermath led to the stars blaming one another and Jackson if anything was less left stupefied by the fact that the team was so soundly dismantled and beaten by the Pistons . Finals MVP Chauncey Billups showed why at the time he was one of the best point guards in the game and coach Larry Brown finally got to win an NBA title to go alongside his NCAA title won at the collegiate level.

This season has been a particularly tough one of sorts for the Lakers, as they were thought to be the presumptive favorites within the Western Conference to return to the postseason . Instead they’ve had to clamor and fight their way into remaining relevant within the conference and make sure that they didn’t slip to far down the rankings in terms of the seedings for a playoff berth. It has been Kobe Bryant ably abetted by Pau Gasol who’ve made sure that the Lakers kept in touch with the front runners in the Western Conference. And while we’ve seen Andrew Bynum finally flourish and show some of that potential many thought he had , it has been the surprise play to my mind of Lamar Odom that has also helped this Lakers’ team rebound when they’ve been somewhat complacent at times . And if anything Odom could be adding some silverware of his own should he win the Sixth Man of the Year Award . He has been that impressive whereby the team can rely upon him to come off the bench and be productive on both ends of the floor.

As two time defending and reigning champions the Lakers do face a daunting challenge in the postseason. And if anything this might be the toughest task Phil Jackson , his coaching staff and the team has faced in quite a while . And while I’m under no illusion that Bryant will be prepared , because of his usual tenacity and will to win. I’m not so sure that the other members on this squad are that readily prepared. Other than Gasol , Odom and Derek Fisher I believe in part that the team has been somewhat complacent and it has shown in many of their most recent results where they’ve lost to teams that they’d normally have beaten handily. Perhaps , I’m simply buying into the fact that the Lakers might well be jaded but then again knowing what I’ve come to know about Phil Jackson as a coach , he’ll most certainly have his team prepared for the playoffs. From thereon in it’s anyone’s guess as to what may well happen . But you can be sure that the Los Angeles Lakers won’t relinquish the defense of their title without an all-out fight to the bitter end .

If this is to be Jackson’s last season as the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers I’m sure that he’ll want to bow out with yet another title win under his belt. With twelve titles to his name as a coach and one as a player with the New York Knicks , would the baker’s dozen be out of the question for this esteemed coach ? He’s left the likes of Red Auberbach in the shade in terms of titles won as a coach . And other than Gregg Popovich he’s the only other active coach in the NBA with multiple title wins . Somewhat surprising to an extent but when one considers the dominance of both the Lakers and San Antonio Spurs and the stranglehold that both teams have had on the NBA title over the past decade when a team outside this duo other than the Boston Celtics wins , I think we’re all taken aback somewhat !

As to who Jackson’s successor might be should he choose to step down I think that more likely than not Mitch Kupchak will hire from within the organization , rather than looking to bring in a high profiled coach . Jim Cleamons , Chuck Person , Frank Hamblen and Brian Shaw are but four of the more likely candidates that Kupchak might consider on the coaching staff at present but the final decision will lay in the hands of Dr Buss , as he if anything will want someone who has the same desires as he has when it comes carry on the success that has become part of the Lakers’ tradition. Age and experience could well be the overall determining factor as to who on the coaching staff could well succeed Phil Jackson .

Do you believe that Garrett will last long in the position as coach or do you believe that he’ll end up being fired by the owner Jerry Jones within perhaps two years ? And should Phil Jackson decide to step down as the rumors are now said to be circling as he wants to spend more time with his family and girlfriend Jeanie Buss . 1. I’ll even admit to buying the Cowboys kool-aid last pre-season. I didn’t foresee the problems they ended up having.

As usual, that’ll be a tough division next year, oh wait, assuming there is a next year.

The only thing I continue to love about the Cowboys are their cheerleaders as more often than not they’re really hot ! Me buying into them as perennial contenders for the Superbowl is like asking me to go out lay odds on Rosie O’Donnell changing her sexual orientation . It ain’t gonna happen !

The NFC East has always been very competitive that’s why they all say it’s the best and most competitive division in the NFL . I no longer believe that to be the case as I now believe that the AFC East is comparable if not better .

I know things tend to be cyclical in terms of the competitiveness of the teams within the conferences and divisions but a lot of that also has to do with the talent and how teams do in the draft.

At this juncture I’m not holding out hope that there’ll be an agreement between the owners and the NFLPA !

Goodell bet on red when he should’ve bet on black . Need I say anymore on the matter ?

I’m no Country & Western fan but I might just go to Cowboys Stadium to see Shania Twain ! I’d knock the stuffing out of that if she’d allow me to . Once she’d gone black I can tell you this she’d never go back !

I’d be the coffee dark chocolate call it what you will to her milk .

  2. I hope the Cowboys continue to underachieve. Seeing that billion dollar stadium empty on Sundays would make me happy!

Tough to pick anyone besides the Lakers in the West. They might not be playing that well these last few games, but they did the same thing down the stretch last year, and that didn’t seem to slow them down on their way to the finals…

    1. chappy

The only time Cowboys Stadium is liable to be filled is if Pacquiao is fighting or there’s a concert featuring a Country & Western act.

The Lakers are still the favorites in the West the only factor I see because of their surprising season and the fact Pop’ is Jackson’s equal when the Spurs are firing on all cylinders . If the two should meet in the conference finals it ought to be a really entertaining one .

      tophatal ………………….

  3. For me the real question about the Cowboys is how long does the relationship between Jason Garrett and Jerry Jones stay on a positive note.

As far as the Lakers are concerned – show me the team you think can beat them 4 out of 7?

    1. JW

Well the answer to your question is ……. not all marriages are made in heaven ………. mine wasn’t . I wanted a super model but instead I ended up wit a bitch on wheels . Now she’s my ex things couldn’t be better ! Garrett has his work cut out for him and if he and Romo aren’t on the same page then this will is doomed for failure . But then again over the last decade anything Jones has touched …. has actually responded as such . He needs to get a real GM in the front office but because he’s such a damn narcissist who’s not always willing to accept any form of criticism things will continue to be the same for this team .

The Lakers will always have a chance as long as Jackson is coaching this team . However if their bench isn’t playing up to par and Kobe is having an off day they’re beatable .

The only team I think within the conference who could probably stay with them if they’re all healthy would be the Spurs . And I know that may well sound bias as I’m an avid Spurs’ fan but with Popovich as Jackson’s opposing coach I think it makes it something of an even match-up in those terms .
